Redefining How Airports Are Maintained

AIrport Inspector is a 5-year joint venture between Mavisoft, Schiphol, SWIC, and VolkerWessels to digitally survey (using Artificial Intelligence) airport runways, taxiways, stands and ramps.

AIrport Inspector provides an end-to-end solution, from laser scanning to providing PCI scores and damage archiving. It delivers inspections with 100% asset coverage and time series degradation analysis, maximizing the lifespan of the assets.

Decreases VOP downtime

AIrport Inspector uses a mobile laser scanning unit that can be used during daytime and night-time. Interference with airport operations is minimal, ensuring no downtime due to inspections.

To ASTM D5340 Standards

The LCMS (Laser Crack Measuring System) provides high-quality imagery that is then analysed by multiple AI models. It is done and classified with standards to provide accurate PCI scores.

Higher Accuracy & Coverage

AIrport Inspector provides 100% coverage of all assets, with a highly accurate result that can be tracked over time.

Intelligence for forward planning

AIrport Inspector tracks the growth of each damage over time, pinpointing potentially harmful damages at early stages. It will ensure a far longer lifespan of the asset and CAPEX savings.

AIrport Inspector key features

Airport asset types:

AIrport Inspector is designed to detect inconsistencies that occur in concrete pavements, blast fences, passenger bridges, crossing points, platform lighting, runways, taxiways, stands and ramps.

Together with partners, we continually add more airport asset types that AIrport Inspector can operate on. Therefore, we are able to work closely with customers to find a solution to their unique asset requirements.

Detection types:

AIrport Inspector has a wide range of detection capabilities, therefore is able to adapt to detecting:

  • Spalling
  • Repairs
  • Cracks
  • Crack repair
  • Popouts
  • Splitting

AIrport Inspector uses the ASTM regime to label and present all detections found. Detection types are classified according to their severity, size and location. If clients have specific needs, we are able to develop a custom set of classifiers that present the key information.

Technology & Integration

AIrport Inspector uses state-of-the-art AI algorithms developed by Mavisoft. The models are built using damage data from different industries to create a robust and generalized result that can be relied on. AIrport Inspector delivers final results (PCI Scores) as a deliverable, but we also provide integration into existing asset management software.

The most common software we integrate into is ArcGIS. However, we are able to adhere to any GIS application as the inspection data itself is always geotagged and ready to be transferred into any geo-based application. Once the integration has been done, the data is prepared to be used for operations and executing maintenance tasks.

Data & Result Outputs

Results from AIrport Inspector can be delivered in several formats depending on the client’s needs.

As standard, we offer comprehensive PDF reports that can include every detection found, whether small or high-level items. We also provide a JSON file with all the raw detection data that clients can use for their own purposes. Therefore the most common report output being used is forwarding the results directly to the client’s GIS, where assets and impairments are visualized along with the damage severity.

Web Portal

To keep track of all reports generated by AIrport Inspector, we offer a web portal that allows clients to view and manage generated results.

The client in the portal is able to generate reports customized to their needs, such as claims processing or repair processing overviews. The web portal also lets clients view the full high-resolution images captured and raw data of all detections.

Airport Inspector Benefits

Lower OPEX

AIrport Inspector is able to lower the costs of collection, processing and analysis. Therefore with more and better information, it is possible to act more timely on detected damage images.

Higher safety factor

With AIrport Inspector, fewer personnel is necessary for concrete pavement inspections. Therefore employees are not being exposed to unhealthy and risky environments (e.g. collision risk).

Additionally, a full inspection can better signal the presence and the emergence of foreign object damage (FOD) and reduce its risk.

Better predictability, lower CAPEX

The recording of damaged images is better and more accurate, making the determination of the PCI value more objective. In doing so, the PCI value is based on an inspection of the entire concrete pavement rather than a sample.

The data can be used to indicate better where investments are needed so that risks can be recognized and mitigated in a timely manner. Currently, maintenance is triggered based on a PCI standard of 70. With more insight into the ageing process, this standard can be adjusted downwards so that the total lifecycle of the pavement can be extended. In the longer term, the quality can be increased with a possible reduction of the CAPEX.

Other operational benefits

  • The inspections can be operated during the day and night.
  • Increased speed of the inspections.
  • The process of inspecting, assessing and reporting is simplified with automation tools.
  • The results of the inspection do not depend on the inspection career.
  • The deterioration of concrete pavement can be better monitored and prevented over the year.

Case study – Schiphol Airport

Mavisoft’s most significant added value is extending the life-cycle of assets. It was proven through a case study by Schiphol Airport, where they conservatively stated that Mavisoft’s technology is able to extend the life-cycle of their assets by 4%.

As an example, Schiphol has over 90 Aprons costing between two to four million euros each to build, bringing the total value to EUR 683,866,667.00. Applying Schiphol’s estimated 4% in the extension of life, it brings our business case for aprons to EUR 27,354,666.70 over the course of 40 years. It will save them, on average, EUR 683,866.66 on a yearly basis for their aprons alone.
